My Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Plot

If I Have To Be A Soldier  follows the story of two childhood friends. This captivating story takes us back in time to 1966 when the MNF had launched an armed rebellion for their demand of a separate nation. The Indian Army Captain Samuel Rego finds his long-lost childhood friend Che, also known as Sena a Mara-tribesman, after many years. They get seperated only to find themselves in the opposite sides of the conflict . What happens when destiny brings Sena and Samuel stand against each other after many years?  Does their friendship reconcile amidst the chaos of the war? Or do they remain as enemies?

My Take

The book offers not only a gripping narrative but also a rich cultural backdrop. By immersing the reader in the landscape, traditions, and lifestyle of Mizoram, the author provides a deeper understanding of the setting and the people involved in the story. Exploring the challenges faced by the Mizo tribes adds layers of complexity to the narrative, highlighting the broader social and political context in which the characters’ struggles unfold.

Samuel and Sena’s loyalty to their respective causes, combined with the complexities of the war and their personal histories, creates a gripping narrative of friendship, betrayal, and the harsh realities of war. As they navigate their roles as soldiers and their conflicting loyalties, they are forced to confront difficult decisions and the consequences of their actions. Ultimately, their journey explores themes of identity, duty, and the bonds that endure even in the midst of conflict.

Their unexpected reunion amidst the conflict brings forth a whirlwind of emotions, including shock, disbelief, and  a glimmer of hope for reconciliation. Samuel  finding himself torn between his sense of duty and his desire to protect his friend, leads to a moral dilemma that challenges his beliefs and values. This emotional turmoil of Samuel has been portrayed well.

The descriptions of the Mizo War  offers readers a valuable opportunity to learn about a historical event that is not  widely known. By delving into the inter-tribal conflicts, the guerrilla warfare tactics employed, and the challenges faced by the tribal communities, the author sheds light on a significant but overlooked chapter in history. This exploration not only deepens the understanding of the specific events of the Mizo War but also provides insights into the broader themes of conflict, resilience, and the human experience in times of war.

The book offers a well-rounded reading experience, with strong character development, vivid narration, and a gripping plot. While I felt the cover design could have been better,  the content of the book more than makes up for it.

My Verdict

With a riveting plot that grips the  readers until the very end, the book is  a thrilling, entertaining and an  informative read that will leave a lasting impression.
