My Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐

My Take

This is the third book in the Delhi Trilogy, based on the Sepoy Mutiny. Author Vineet Bajpai throws light on the historical events of the 1857 Rebellion. With his descriptive narration the author transforms us to the pre Independence Era, and gives us a visual imagery of the events at the back of our mind.

I usually summarize the plot but here that job is done in the blurb. Set in Delhi, the book explored the life and problems of not just the protagonist Mastaan but also the common people of Delhi. We experience the pain, emotions and torture along with the characters. The British’s Divide and Rule policy, the punishments and torture imparted to the people etc have been discussed in detail. Although we have studied these in school, we get a clear picture of what exactly happened. This shows the extensive research that has gone into the compilation.

There’s everything that one can ask for in a book, be it action, suspense, fantasy or adventure and above all a thrilling experience. The rich heritage and the vibrancy of Delhi comes alive in this book which will surely urge one to visit the place once.

The author has included a synopsis which gives the readers a brief story of the previous parts but I suggest that one reads the previous 2 books to know the actual plot. Also I like the way the author has presented the events with the dates. This makes it easy to follow as historical facts are to be remembered by the dates they took place. The author’s way of naming the chapters is interesting.

The plot is well crafted and gripping with characters that relatable and developed perfectly. Written in simple language it is beginner friendly. The author’s skillful narration grips the readers to the book.

My Verdict

A treat for readers of historical fiction.
